Vicky gazed on at Jamie working, increasingly excited in anticipation of their new arrival. She watched him consciensciusly going about his preparations; proving to her he would be the ideal father to her child. During intimate moments, she felt the presence of the team beyond, making her aware the soul within her womb was a chosen oneâ it served to remind her again, how, as proven souls, their celestial task had begun. Gradually Jamie relaxed, finally completing all the practical aspects for the birth of their child.
The summer drifted by, with all the familiesâ eyes focused towards Copper Beech Cottage; Molly, in particular, was making regular visits thereâ despite her great age. By the time Jack had applied the finishing touches to the nursery, the end of Vickyâs maternal confinement was approachingâ it providing Jamie with something else to stress him.
An exceptionally warm period saw them into the autumn of that yearâ it could not have been worse for Vicky. Struggling with her swollen stomach, she found it difficult to maintain her poise and suppress her irritability with Jamie, he, incessantly mothering her. Somehow she managed to retain her dignityâ helped by the knowledge that her time was near.
With just a few days off before the festive celebrations were due to start, she began to experience the first serious labour pains. Jamie, of course, started to panic, snatching up the packed case on each contraction she complained of. Ironically it helped to divert her; amused at watching him fall to pieces, having appeared so calm and collected over previous weeks.
On the eve of the birth of the celebrated Divine Beingâs festivities, it was moving towards the midnight hour. Vicky realised the contractions had increased to the point where she had been told to make her way to hospital. Crying out it was time, sent Jamie into a flat spin, leaving Vickyâs chair-bound mum, Kay, to cope. Making their way out to the car, Jamie settled Vicky in and then leapt into the driving seat; Vicky, casually pointing out her mum was still sitting in her wheelchair outside. Jamie scrambled back out. Man-handling Vickyâs mum in, he folded up her chair and threw it in the boot.
Vickyâs face creased up again, crying out the period between her contractions was decreasingâ feeling the birth of their child was imminent.
Jamie went pale at the news; sweat pouring down his face. A symphony of grating gears echoed around the cab as Jamie fumbled with the gear-lever.
âPush the clutch down, Jamieâ squealed Vicky.
âIâm trying,â he muttered frantically.
âOh, Mum, canât you drive, Jamieâs going to pile us into a tree or lamppost,â muttered Vicky irrationally.
âItâs alright⦠Iâm alrightâ¦,â he bellowed impatiently.
Kay was unable to hold back a smile; pointing out the futility of her daughterâs request. It mellowed the panic in the car; her and Vicky smiling at a manic Jamie screeching around corners, and finally in through the hospital entrance.
Pulling up outside the maternity unit, Vicky was soon registered and moved to a delivery room.
She smiled at Jamieâs pale face.
